Abstract

The peritoneal equilibration test (PET) has become a widely accepted method for characterizing peritoneal membrane transport properties in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients. However, the time and effort required for both patients and nurse often renders this impractical. In this study, we evaluated if the data obtained at second hour during the 4-hour standard PET accurately predicted 4th hour results.

The standard 4-hour PET was performed in 66 CAPD patients. The ratios of dialysate/plasma creatinine (D/Pcrea) and dialysate/initial dialysate glucose

(D/Do glu) at 0, 2 and 4th hours were determined. There were significant correlations between the ratios ofDVPcrea and D4/Pcrea (r=0.896, p<0.0001), and D2/Do glu and D4/Do glu (r=0.884, p<0.0001). The patients were classified to transport groups based on both the ratios of 2nd and 4th hour D/Pcrea, and the transport group unchanged in 80.3% of the patients.

Our results indicate that 4-hour D/Pcrea and D/Do glu ratios are accurately predicted by 2-hour ratios, and the PET can be abbreviate to 2 hour.
