Abstract
Peritoneal dialysis has become an important renal replacement therapy (RRT) for children with endstage renal disease (ESRD). The aim of this study is to report the short term results of a pediatric center.
From December 1995 to November 1996 ten children (5 girls, 5 boys) aged 3.5 - 15 years (average 9.35+4.51 years) were admitted into CAPD program. In all the children double - cuffed swan neck catheter was implanted percutaneously. Patients used twin bag system (Dianeal 137 - Baxter).
The observation period ranged from 5.5 to 12 months (average 8.50±2.44 months). The complications were peritonitis in 5 patients, inguinal hernia in 2 patients and inadequate drainage in 2 patients. The rate of peritonitis was 1/17 patient-months.
In conclusion, CAPD is an acceptable form of renal replacement theraphy in children with ESRD.
